For all things there is a season…

As I am noting my thoughts in this writing, Spring is upon us in the northern hemisphere beginning March 20th when the sun ingresses into the sign of Aries ♈. Although many of us celebrate the new year January 1st, for Astrologers, the new year truly begins with the coming of spring.

On my walk around the lake a couple of days ago, I could feel the transition from winter to spring. It was an absolutely glorious day. The sun was shining and sky was blue but yet, there was still a slight chill in the air, not enough to wear a coat but a sweater sufficed. What a perfect day to experience the blending of winter and spring.

Yes, spring begins the astrological new year but along with the remaining three seasons, also commences the four quadrants of the zodiac wheel:

1. The First Quadrant (zodiac houses one to three) begins with the Spring Equinox at zero degree Aries ♈, cardinal fire. This first quadrant period represents our youth and becoming self-aware.

2. The Second Quadrant (zodiac houses four to six) begins with the Summer Solstice at zero degree Cancer ♋, cardinal water. During the second quadrant period, we are young adults who become rooted to our personal lives and families.

3. The Third Quadrant (zodiac houses seven to nine) begins with the Fall Equinox at zero degree Libra ♎, cardinal air. The third quadrant represents later adulthood, dealings with others and moving out into the world.

4. The Fourth Quadrant (zodiac houses ten to twelve) begins with Winter Solstice at zero degree Capricorn ♑, cardinal earth. A time of maturity, accomplishment, reputation and self-actualization.

This zero degree of the cardinal signs is known as the Aries Point sometimes called the World Point. The Aries Point refers to the 0 degree of Cardinal Signs as mentioned above: 0 Aries, 0 Cancer, 0 Libra, and 0 Capricorn. Using a 1-2 degree orb, we can include 28-29 degrees of Mutable signs (Gemini, Virgo, Sagittarius, Pisces) as well as up to 1-2 degrees of Cardinal signs.

The Aries Point is the beginning of each new season. Kathy Rose, astrologer, in her article written for The Mountain Astrologer Magazine, titled, “The Aries Point Bloom”, she shares her observations and research on the effects of having planets and placements at this extremely powerful point and Rose states in reference to The Aries Point: “a special area that relates to high public visibility.”

In Western astrology, we base our interpretations of the planetary positions on the relationship between our home, Earth, and the Sun. The seasons definitely affect what we do in our lives and how we do it. If it’s summer, we’re at the beach; if it’s winter, we’re in the rain or snow. We plan our lives around the seasons.

Moving It Forward

Just as the cardinal signs initiate the seasons, natives born with the sun in a cardinal sign, are also considered initiators and go-getters reaffirming the archetypes of the signs.

Aries —the initiator of spring—these natives move things forward, sometimes with their sheer force as they are ruled by Mars. They are courageous, pioneers, headstrong and enthusiastic.

Cancer —the initiator of summer— true to its cardinal status as a leader, Cancerians are leaders in the exploration of emotions. Ruled by the moon, their emotions inspire them to create. Whether building a comfortable family home or a successful business, they can tap into a wealth of e-motion.

Libra —the initiator of fall— represented by the scales, where would we be without balance in our lives? Answering to the planet of Venus, librans tend to be loyal, diplomatic, charming and enjoy engaging others in the exchange of ideas.

Capricorn —the initiator of winter— ruled by the planet Saturn, Caps are structured and grounded in their approach. Methodical and driven, their handwork and perseverance usually finds them at the top as CEOs are running things in some way.

Every year, The seasons present us with the opportunity to begin anew. Metaphorically and in real life, the seasons represent fresh starts in life.

No matter what the season, whether you are in the spring of your life or the winter, “for everything there is a season.”
